Al Ahly have been awarded a 2-0 victory over arch-rivals Zamalek after the latter refused to play the Cairo derby on Tuesday.
The Reds were set to host Zamalek on Tuesday, June 25 in a postponed game of the 2023/24 Egyptian Premier League season.
Following their home defeat to Al Masry last week, Zamalek lodged a complaint to the EFA citing refereeing injustice and outlined four demands that must be met to continue participating in the Egyptian Premier League.
One of the four demands was the refusal to continue playing the remaining league matches until all competing teams complete all the first-leg matches, given that their rivals Al Ahly played only 18 games so far, two less than Zamalek.
Zamalek also demanded the appointment of an independent committee from outside the Egyptian Football Association and the Clubs Association to reorganize and reschedule the league matches to ensure complete impartiality.
The club sat the Pharco game as the deadline to receive a full schedule of all remaining matches until the end of the season and that all previous demands are met.
With the EFA and the Club Association failing to meet Zamalek’s demands, the club has revealed they won’t show up to the Cairo derby on Tuesday, leaving the EFA no option but to award Al Ahly the win.
This marks the second time in five seasons that Zamalek has forfeited a Cairo derby after the 2019/20 season incident.
Not only were Al Ahly awarded the three points, but Zamalek also received a three-point deduction that will see them drop down to 12th on the league table.
Meanwhile, Al Ahly will remain in second with 45 points, 17 behind leaders Pyramids FC; however, the Reds still have six games in hand.
