French striker Anthony Modeste has officially departed African champions Al Ahly after his contract with the club expired.
Modeste joined Al Ahly in the summer on a free transfer from Borussia Dortmund but has struggled to leave a mark during his time in Cairo.
The 36-year-old scored six goals while assisting further four in 31 games, helping the club win the CAF Champions League title, the Egypt Cup, the Egypt Super Cup, as well as, the Club World Cup bronze medal.
He will mostly be remembered by the fans for his late winner in the Egypt Super Cup final, which won the Reds the title against Modern Future.
Despite the club having the option to extend his deal for one further season, Al Ahly opted not to as they will search for a new striker in the summer.
The Frenchman took to social media to post a farewell message to Al Ahly and its fanbase, which read: “The day has come and it’s time to say goodbye. I am proud and grateful to have been a part of this historic club. I have worn and lived the eagle with honour.
“Thank you to all the fans for their incredible daily support and love. You are beyond great and made this experience truly special! I also want to thank the coaches, staff, and above all my teammates!
In the last 10 months, I have been able to gain a lot of new skills and learn so much more!
“Thank you to everyone who welcomed me, supported me, and accompanied me on my little journey. I wish you all the best and continued success.”
Modeste’s departure will mean that Al Ahly will now continue the remainder of the season with only Wessam Abou Ali and Mahmoud Kahraba as the striker options.
