Saint-Étienne defender arrives in Egypt ahead of Zamalek move

AS Saint-Étienne’s Moroccan full-back Mahmoud Bentayg is set to join Cairo giants Zamalek on a season-long loan.

The Whites are in desperate need to reinforce their squad, especially the left-back position, following Ahmed Fetouh’s arrest and Mohamed Abdelshafy’s imminent retirement.

It looks like the choice has been put on Mahmoud Bentayg, who plies his trade at Ligue 1 outfit Saint-Étienne, for him to become Zamalek’s first summer signing.

According to Foot Mercato, Bentayg will arrive in Egypt on Tuesday to join Zamalek on a season-long loan; however, both clubs are yet to reach an agreement, but it’s believed to be close.

The 24-year-old joined Saint-Étienne only last summer from Raja Casablanca for a fee of €600,000, helping the club earn promotion from Ligue 2 through the playoffs.

In Saint-Étienne, Bentayg made 23 appearances, coming off the bench on 21 occasions, scoring once while assisting a further goal as well as featuring in all three promotion playoff games as a substitute.

This season, he was left out of the Saint-Étienne squad for both their opening games as the team currently sit in the relegation zone.

The news comes after Achraf Bencharki’s return to Zamalek fell through as the club’s tight financial situation is making it very hard to sign new players.

Zamalek had a disastrous last season, finishing third in the Egyptian Premier League, losing the 2022 Egypt Cup final to Al Ahly, while also getting knocked out of the 2022/23 Egypt Cup round of 16 by El-Gaish.
