Mokwena 'trying to convince' Percy Tau to join Wydad amid Chiefs interest

South African manager Rhulani Mokwena is trying to convince his compatriot Percy Tau to join him in Wydad Casablanca.

The Reds’ head coach Marcel Koller has made it clear that he doesn’t need Percy Tau anymore in his squad after a reported fall-out between both parties.

Tau has one year left on his current contract with Al Ahly and refuses to leave by mutual consent this summer without taking the rest of his remaining salary.

South African giants Kaizer Chiefs are long-term admirers of Percy Tau and it’s believed they have already started talks with the forward over a potential summer move.

However, Kaizer Chiefs will have to battle Wydad Casablanca, whose manager Rhulani Mokwena is reportedly doing his utmost to bring Tau to Morocco, according to Al-Mountakhab.

Wydad are having a busy summer, having already brought 18 players, following a disastrous season that saw them finish sixth and miss out on the African competitions next season.

On the other hand, Al Ahly are trying to find a solution to Percy Tau’s dilemma as they are keen on his departure to open up space in their foreign players quota.

Tau left South Africa in July 2018 when he moved to Brighton from Sundowns and has since had several spells in Belgium, before joining Al Ahly in August 2021.

During his time in Cairo, Percy Tau has made 109 appearances for Al Ahly in which he scored 27 goals and assisted 13 as he constantly struggled with injuries.

Last season, he made 33 appearances, scoring nine goals, and helping the club win the CAF Champions League, the Egyptian Premier title, the Egypt Super Cup, and the Club World Cup bronze medal.
