Egyptian Premier League clubs have approved an exceptional format for the upcoming season after a meeting held on Wednesday, September 18.
The 2023-2024 season ended in August, despite starting in September 2023, making it the longest domestic football season in Egyptian history.
This extended schedule led to Al Ahly withdrawing from the Egypt Cup to allow their squad to rest ahead of the new season.
With Al Ahly set to participate in the newly introduced 2025 Club World Cup, the Egyptian Football Association (EFA) is determined to avoid a similar scheduling conflict. As a result, the upcoming season must conclude before June 2025.
To address this issue, the Egyptian Professional Clubs Association announced that they will implement the Belgian league format for the 2024/25 season. The format will proceed as follows:
- The first phase will feature a traditional round-robin where all teams play each other.
- In the second phase, the top nine teams will compete to determine the league champion, while the bottom nine teams will face off in a separate league to avoid relegation.
- Both groups will play a single round-robin format.
In addition to approving this new format, the clubs also agreed to reduce relegation spots to two teams for the upcoming season, rather than the usual three.
The new season will kick off on October 30, 2024, and conclude by June 6, 2025.
The official draw for the league will take place in the first week of October.
