English manager Steven Gerrard expressed dissatisfaction with his team’s overall performance, despite their 2-0 victory in the Saudi Cup.
In the post-match press conference, Gerrard acknowledged the importance of the win but was critical of the team’s play.
“We achieved the most important thing, which is winning,” he said. “However, I wasn’t happy with the performance for the first 75 minutes. We only really came alive in the last 15. Al Adalah were a strong opponent.”
He also shed light on his squad rotation decisions, stating, “I wanted to give some players a rest after a tough match against Al Nassr and with another game coming up soon. This was an opportunity to rotate and give other players a chance to impress.”
Gerrard concluded by emphasizing that he holds all his players in equal regard, saying, “I don’t want to undermine anyone’s abilities. Every player is equally important to me.”
Al Ettifaq’s 2-0 win over Al Adalah secured their spot in the Saudi Cup round of 16, thanks to two late goals from Karl Toko Ekambi in the 78th and 94th minutes.
Next, Gerrard’s side will face Al Taawoun on September 29, 2024, at 9 PM CET.
