Al Ahly coach Marcel Koller has expressed his team’s desire for payback after their recent loss to Zamalek in the African Super Cup, which took place just a month ago.
Al Ahly advanced to the 2024 Egyptian Super Cup final after a 2-1 win over Ceramica Cleopatra, setting up a showdown with Zamalek. Zamalek secured their spot in the final by defeating Pyramids 5-4 on penalties, after a 1-1 draw in regular time.
In his post-match press conference, Koller stated: “Al Ahly doesn’t need a psychologist to prepare the players. What we need is for them to give their all. We have great quality in the squad, and we’re seeing the players focus more on both defense and attack.”
The Swiss coach emphasized, “I’ve spoken to the players multiple times about winning individual duels, and we’re working on that. We’re aiming to get the team to a level where they can perform at their best.”
However, Koller downplayed any perceived advantage, noting, “The fact that Al Ahly has won the Super Cup twice in the same stadium doesn’t guarantee us an edge over Zamalek.”
Reflecting on their previous encounter, he admitted, “We were very disappointed after losing the CAF Super Cup to Zamalek, especially since it went to penalties.”
“We want revenge for that loss. The players are aware of this, and they’re eager to make the fans proud. I hope the team will be at their best in the Super Cup final, and we aim to win it.”
The final will take place on Thursday, October 24, 2024, at 8 PM CET, with the Egyptian Super Cup trophy on the line.
