Egyptian giants Al Ahly have secured the African Championship title with a comfortable victory over Benin’s Flowers in the final.
Al Ahly’s path to the title was not an easy one by any means. In Friday’s semi-final, the Red Devils edged out archrivals Zamalek in a tense 26-25 win.
They led 15-13 at halftime, but Zamalek fought back to level the score at 25-25 with only 30 seconds remaining. In the dying moments, Al Ahly’s Abdel-Rahman Faisal scored the decisive goal with just one second left on the clock, securing their spot in the final.
In the final, Ahly dominated from start to finish. By halftime, they held a commanding 22-11 lead over Benin’s Flowers.
Flowers had secured their final spot with a victory over Morocco’s Montada Derb Sultan in the semi-finals. However, they could not put up much of a challenge against the defending champions, as Al Ahly cruised to a comfortable 43-22 victory.
Earlier on Saturday, Zamalek claimed the bronze medal with a 35-25 victory over Montada Derb Sultan in the third-place match.
With this championship win, Al Ahly continue to chase record-holders Zamalek, as the two Egyptian giants remain the leading forces in African handball.
