Diogo Jota and his brother, Andre Jota, passed away in the early hours of Thursday morning on a highway in the Zamora region of Spain. Emergency services responded to the scene of the accident after receiving distress calls, but both occupants of the vehicle were pronounced dead at the scene.

Local authorities indicated that a tyre burst may have caused the vehicle to suddenly change direction off the road and catch fire.

“Everything suggests a tyre burst. The vehicle left the road and caught fire, resulting in the deaths of both occupants,” a statement from regional officials read.

The devastating news comes just days after Jota celebrated his wedding with his long-time partner, with whom he shared three children. The Liverpool and Portugal star had shared a video from his wedding hours before his passing, with the caption, “A day we will never forget.”
