Mahmoud El Khatib

Al Ahly president Mahmoud El Khatib has officially confirmed he will run in the upcoming club elections, reversing his decision to step away.

Mahmoud El Khatib, who had announced in recent weeks that he would not seek another term, revealed he had a change of heart following pressure and support from those close to him, as well as widespread backing from club members and fans.

In a statement released through the club’s official website, El-Khatib addressed Al Ahly members and supporters.

“I have always pledged to put the club’s interests before my own. Although I previously announced I would step aside for health reasons, the love and trust of Al Ahly members and fans had a deep impact on me. After extensive consultations, I have decided to continue in this position of responsibility to serve Al Ahly in the best way possible.”

The Al Ahly board held several meetings in recent days to finalise preparations for the elections, including reviewing all required documents and overseeing the logistics of the process.

Additionally, reports emerged revealing El Khatib’s electoral list. Namely, business tycoon Yassin Mansour as his vice president and Khaled Mortagy as treasurer. The list of senior board members includes Tarek Kandil, Mohamed El-Gazzar, Mohamed El-Damaty, Mohamed El-Garhy, Sayed Abdel-Hafiz, Ahmed Hossam Awad, and Hazem Hilal. Ibrahim El-Amry and Roweida Hesham complete the lineup.

During his presidency, Al Ahly won five Premier League titles, three Egypt Cups, six Egyptian Super Cups, four CAF Champions League trophies, and two CAF Super Cups. Additionally, the club competed in five FIFA Club World Cups, earning three bronze medals, and became the first African team to qualify for the inaugural FIFA Intercontinental Cup.
