
Egypt beat Australia on penalties after a 1-1 draw in Dallas to reach the World Cup round of 16 and extend their tournament run.
Egypt reached the World Cup round of 16 for the first time after beating Australia on penalties following a 1-1 draw in their round-of-32 match in Dallas on Friday.
Hossam Hassan’s side advanced after the match remained level through extra time, continuing Egypt’s historic campaign after the team had already reached the knockout stage for the first time.
Emam Ashour gave Egypt the lead in the 13th minute, heading in after Mohamed Salah’s free-kick routine helped create the chance.
Australia equalised in the 55th minute when Mohamed Hany headed into his own net while trying to clear an Aiden O’Neill free-kick under pressure from Harry Souttar.
Egypt had chances to win the match before penalties. Australia’s Patrick Beach saved Rami Rabia’s stoppage-time header, and Salah missed a chance in extra time.
Australia also pushed for a winner after equalising, but could not break down Egypt before the shootout.
The win makes Egypt the second Arab team to reach the last 16 at the 2026 World Cup after Morocco. The Pharaohs remain unbeaten in the tournament after draws with Belgium and Iran, a 3-1 win over New Zealand, and the penalty shootout victory over Australia.
Egypt will face the winner of Argentina and Cape Verde in the round of 16 on July 7.
Australia exit after reaching the knockout stage for the third time in their history. The Socceroos had finished second in Group D before facing Egypt.
