Egyptian midfielder Kareem Ahmed has joined the University of Pittsburgh’s men’s soccer programme after leaving Liverpool.
Pittsburgh have added the 19-year-old to their official roster for the 2026 season. Kareem Ahmed will begin his college career as a freshman and wear the number seven shirt.
Kareem will now compete in NCAA Division I and the Atlantic Coast Conference, one of the leading competitions in American college soccer.
Pittsburgh begin their regular season at home to seventh-ranked Maryland on Thursday, August 20, where he could make his Panthers debut at Ambrose Urbanic Field.
The move follows the end of his long association with Liverpool. He joined the club’s academy at six and progressed through their youth teams, and scored on his U18 debut in an FA Youth Cup match away to Bournemouth in December 2022.
Kareem produced seven goals and five assists for Liverpool’s U18s during the 2024/25 season. He also appeared against Bologna and RB Leipzig in the UEFA Youth League.
Those performances earned Ahmed his first professional contract in July 2025. Liverpool then promoted him to the U21 squad under former Wales manager Rob Page.
The youngster played in Premier League 2 and the EFL Trophy during his final season on Merseyside. He also continued to represent Liverpool in the UEFA Youth League, where he scored after only 58 seconds in a 2-0 away victory over Galatasaray in September.
However, he did not make a senior appearance for Liverpool. The club confirmed in June that Ahmed would leave when his contract expired. His departure came less than a year after he signed professional terms.
Ahmed has also been involved with Egypt at youth level. He trained with the Egyptian U20 side ahead of the 2025 World Cup but missed the final squad for technical reasons. He later joined Egypt’s 2007-born youth team for another camp in February 2026.
His move to Pittsburgh gives him a new development route through the US college system, with the Panthers scheduled to play at least 16 regular-season matches this year.
