Salah failed to score or assist as Trabzonspor lost at Ferencváros, exiting the Europa League before Fatih Tekke announced his resignation.
Trabzonspor will enter the Conference League league phase after losing both legs of their Europa League playoff without scoring. The Turkish side’s tactical plan unravelled when Ruslan Malinovskyi received a straight red card in the 13th minute for catching Mariano Gómez on the ankle.
Callum O’Dowda headed Ferencváros ahead six minutes later after meeting Ádám Nagy’s cross at the far post. Trabzonspor’s best first-half opportunity fell to Muçi in the 27th minute. Dénes Dibusz pushed the Albanian midfielder’s shot behind for a corner.
Márius Corbu doubled the hosts’ advantage in the 54th minute after dispossessing the Trabzonspor defence and carrying the ball into the penalty area.
Sidny Lopes Cabral then received his second yellow card for conceding a penalty three minutes later, reducing the visitors to nine players. Bamidele Yusuf converted the resulting spot kick before Krisztián Lisztes completed the 4-0 victory with a low strike in the 86th minute.
Tekke removed Salah and Noah Saviolo after the third goal, introducing Ozan Tufan and Samet Akaydin in the 64th minute.
The Egypt captain finished the match without a goal or assist, with Trabzonspor producing only six attempts and four touches inside the opposition penalty area.
Ferencváros registered 27 shots, controlled 68% of possession and generated 3.66 expected goals compared with Trabzonspor’s 0.45.
Salah also failed to score during the first leg despite recording a team-high six attempts. Ferencváros won that match 1-0 in Trabzon, as KingFut previously reported.
Trabzonspor therefore finished the tie with no goals and three red cards. Chibuike Nwaiwu was dismissed during stoppage time in the first leg before Malinovskyi and Cabral were sent off in Budapest.
The result marked a sharp change from Salah’s weekend performance. He scored twice during a 2-1 league victory over İstanbul Başakşehir and had another two goals disallowed.
Tekke accepted responsibility for the European exit during his interview with the broadcaster and announced his immediate resignation.
“As of now, I am resigning from my 18-month role. This is the punishment I give myself,” Tekke said.
The 48-year-old said the defeat belonged to him and his staff. He added that he “could accept misfortune during matches but could not accept this performance.”
