Al Ahly forward Hussein El-Shahat expressed his delight at leading his team to the top of their group in the CAF Champions League.
El-Shahat scored the only goal as Al Ahly secured a 1-0 victory over Tanzanian side Young Africans in the final group stage match of the CAF Champions League.
With this goal, he has now scored his 20th goal for Al Ahly in African competitions, matching Walid Soliman’s record and ranking fourth among the club’s top scorers in African competitions.
El-Shahat said post-match: “It’s a very important win. We wanted to maintain our lead in the group without any losses.
“Of course, I am happy to score the winning goal, but the most important thing is the team, the three points, and qualifying at the top of the group.”
The result meant that Al Ahly secured qualification for the quarter-finals of the CAF Champions League, leading the group with 12 points followed by Young Africans with 8 points.
This is the first time in five years that Al Ahly reached the quarter-finals while topping the group, the last time being in the 2019 edition.
