Al Ahly crowned Egyptian Premier League champions for 44th time

Al Ahly have been crowned Egyptian Premier League champions for the 44th time after beating Smouha on Thursday evening.

Ahead of the game, the Reds needed just one point from their last four league games to be confirmed champions for the 2024/25 season, having beat Arab Contractors 4-0 earlier this week.

The Reds got more than the one point they were looking for as a 95th winner from Mohamed Magdy Afsha broke the deadlock after a very cagey game that saw Smouha sit deep and defend their net.

The late winner saw Al Ahly’s points tally increase to 81, extending the gap between them and second-placed Pyramids to eight points, with the latter only having two games left to play.

The win also saw Al Ahly extend their winning run to 20 consecutive league games, a new Egyptian Premier League record in a single season.

Pyramids spent the majority of the season at the top of the table, before an insane 20-game winning run from Al Ahly, which included two victories over Pyramids, saw the Reds shoot all the way up to the top to win the Egyptian Premier League title.

The title is Al Ahly’s 44th in the club’s history, 30 more than their closest competitors and arch-rivals Zamalek, who have 14 titles to their name, most recently in 2022.

This also marks Al Ahly’s third trophy of the season after winning the Egypt Super Cup and the CAF Champions League final against Modern Future and EspĂ©rance Sportive de Tunis respectively.

Swiss head coach Marcel Koller has also now claimed his ninth title in Cairo, having won two league titles, two Egypt Cups, three Egypt Super Cups, and two CAF Champions Leagues.

While Al Ahly could still claim the Egypt Cup, set to be played late this August, it has been revealed that the Reds might withdraw or use their reserves in order give the coaching staff and their key players some rest ahead of the new season.
