Al Ahly are reportedly close to appointing Danish manager Thomas Thomasberg as their new head coach, replacing interim coach Emad El Nahhas.
According to various reports, the Red Devils may be close to signing a new manager. After Jose Riveiro was dismissed last month, Al Ahly has been linked with many coaches, with the latest being former Benfica manager Bruno Lage.
However, the Cairo giants’ search seems to be coming to an end with Thomas Thomasberg set to take the helm at the club. The Danish coach is expected to arrive in Cairo this week to begin his tenure with the record 12-time CAF Champions League winners, replacing interim coach Emad El Nahhas.
Thomas Thomasberg previously worked with Al Ahly star player Emam Ashour at his previous club, FC Midtjylland, though the midfielder struggled for playing time under him. Ashour had joined the Danish club from Zamalek and made a bright start, scoring on both his Europa League and league debuts.
However, the midfielder saw his minutes shrink following the arrival of Thomasberg, featuring just seven times in total and scoring twice. He would later return to Egypt to sign for Al Ahly.
Thomasberg’s managerial career has included notable success in Denmark, leading Midtjylland to the Superliga title, winning the Danish Cup with Randers FC, and securing the second division championship with Hobro IK.
His reported move to Cairo comes almost a month after his contract termination at Midtjylland, a departure that coincided with Riveiro’s exit from Al Ahly.
