Al Ahly will appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport after FIFA ordered them to compensate former head coach Jose Riveiro.
FIFA’s Players’ Status Chamber ruled in Jose Riveiro’s favour and awarded him full compensation, including a three-month penalty clause written into his contract.
Abdullah Shehata, legal adviser to Al Ahly, said the club will challenge the decision once it receives a detailed reasoning from FIFA.
According to the official statement, Al Ahly will file an appeal before the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) against the ruling issued by the FIFA Players’ Status Chamber. Alongside the three-month penalty clause, the ruling grants him total compensation of $588,000.
Shehata added that Al Ahly plan to submit the appeal within a maximum of three weeks after receiving the full written grounds.
The ruling is not final. There are further levels of litigation, and an appeal will be submitted in accordance with the applicable procedures, the statement said.
Riveiro left Al Ahly after just three months in charge, having joined the club from South Africa’s Orlando Pirates. His 94-day tenure included seven matches across the domestic league and the FIFA Club World Cup, during which the team recorded 1 win, 2 defeats, and 4 draws.
After his departure, Emad El-Nahhas took over on an interim basis before the club appointed Danish coach Jess Thorup as the permanent head coach.
Jose Riveiro has since returned to management in Europe. In January, Swedish club AIK announced his appointment as head coach on a contract running until 2028.
