UAE club Al Ain has announced the dismissal of Argentine coach Hernan Crespo following a string of disappointing performances.
Calls for Crespo’s departure have been growing louder recently following a dip in the team’s performance, reaching a tipping point after the devastating loss to Al Ahly in the FIFA Intercontinental Cup, which further fueled fans’ demand for a coaching change.
Less than a week later, Al Ain suffered another heavy defeat, losing 5-1 to Saudi club Al Nassr in the AFC Champions League.
Al Ain stated that the club would announce Crespo’s replacement in the coming hours, once the contract formalities are completed.
In an official statement, the club said:
“Al Ain Football Club Board of Directors reached an agreement on Wednesday with Argentine coach Hernan Crespo and his coaching staff to terminate their contracts.
The Board thanks the coaching team for their professionalism and contributions to the club, especially in achieving last season’s AFC Champions League title. However, recent results have not met expectations, and we wish them success in their future endeavors.
The Board confirms that the new head coach will be announced shortly after finalizing the contract procedures.”
In the weeks leading up to the manager’s dismissal, Al Ain has endured five losses since the beginning of October, including defeats to Al Gharafa, Al Hilal, and Al Nassr in the AFC Champions League, and a 2-1 league loss to Al Wahda. In the Intercontinental Cup, Al Ain was also defeated 3-0 by Al Ahly.
Crespo led the team in 47 games, achieving 23 wins, 6 draws, and 18 losses. Last season, Crespo guided Al Ain to the prestigious AFC Champions League title.
