Benni McCarthy eyes coachig opportunities in North Africa

Following in the footsteps of Pitso Mosimane, Benni McCarthy has expressed interest in taking on coaching opportunities in North Africa.

South African coach Benni McCarthy is currently on the job market after his contract with Manchester United ended in June, he has been at the club since the summer of 2022, serving alongside Erik ten Hag on the first team’s coaching staff.

Amid his job vacancy, he spoke about his ambitions and readiness to take on challenges in North Africa or with other major clubs in the continent and discussed what he could bring to clubs in the region if given the chance.

McCarthy said on the On The Whistle Podcast: “The first step is belief in yourself. I had that belief as a player, and I still have it now as a coach, I never limited myself to just being an ordinary player, and I won’t do that with my coaching career.

“I believe I can reach the level of the best coaches in the world with the right club, the right opportunity, and given the chance.”

He elaborated on his coaching philosophy further: “I know how much effort I put in, and I understand how players think and the mentality required for success. It’s about the style of football you want to play, the kind that players want to be part of. A team must play a brand of football that resonates with its players.”

“It’s not necessarily about beautiful football, but rather a winning brand of football, one that players are proud to be part of. That’s the vision I bring as a manager, and I believe I can deliver when given the chance.”

Pitso Mosimane opened new doors for South African coaches when he joined Al Ahly in 2020 from Mamelodi Sundowns, becoming the first South African coach to lead the Egyptian giants.

His time with Al Ahly was met with huge success too, securing two CAF Champions League titles, two CAF Super Cup trophies, one Egyptian Premier League title, and one Egyptian Cup.

Benni McCarthy seems to want to follow in the footsteps of his fellow countryman and with a big name like Manchester United in his portfolio, it would be more than likely that he would get the chance he’s looking for.
