Pyramids FC and Congolese striker Fiston Mayele capped a historic year by sweeping the CAF Interclub Awards in Morocco.

This year’s CAF Awards mark the first time Pyramids win the prestigious club accolade, and the third consecutive year an Egyptian side has claimed the honour. The Cairo club becomes just the third Egyptian team to win the award, after Ahly (7 times) and Zamalek (once, in 2002).

Additionally, Fiston Mayele capped a phenomenal season after powering Pyramids to their first-ever CAF Champion League with a victory over Mamelodi Sundowns in the final. The Congolese striker was also the sole goal scorer in the CAF Super Cup, helping the club secure that trophy as well.

“I feel extremely proud. I’m very happy with this award,” said an emotional Mayele. “It’s the first time in my career that I win such a prize, and it’s a truly special moment for me.”

The Congolese forward beat out his teammate Mohamed Chibi and RS Berkane’s Oussama Lamlioui to win the individual honour.

In a classy gesture, Mayele acknowledged his teammate, “Mohamed Chibi is here with us tonight. He also deserved to win this award. He is an exceptional player.”

Last year’s winner was Ronwen Williams, the South African international goalkeeper for Mamelodi Sundowns.

Fiston Mayele’s well-deserved recognition also comes at the heels of him being last season’s top scorer of the Champions League with six goals.
