New Zealand captain Chris Wood suffered a knee injury during Nottingham Forest’s Europa League quarter-final against Porto on Thursday. The setback comes shortly before the World Cup, where New Zealand will face Egypt in Group G.
Wood left the match after Jan Bednarek struck his right knee with a high kick in the eighth minute. The challenge brought a red card for the Porto defender. Wood tried to continue, received treatment, and then came off in the 15th minute.
The extent of the injury, which comes at a sensitive time for New Zealand, was not immediately clear. Wood recently returned from a knee injury that kept him on the sidelines for six months.
With the World Cup just two months away, the striker remains central to New Zealand’s plans as captain and leading striker. He scored 20 goals last season for Forest.
