Egypt beat New Zealand 3-1 to claim their first-ever World Cup win and move top of Group G before their final match against Iran.

Egypt beat New Zealand 3-1 in Vancouver on Sunday to record their first-ever FIFA World Cup victory and take control of Group G before the final round of matches.

The win moved Egypt to four points from two games, ahead of Iran and Belgium on two points each and New Zealand on one. The Egyptian national team will qualify automatically for the round of 32 if they avoid defeat against Iran on June 26.

New Zealand took the lead in the 15th minute when Finn Surman headed in from a corner. Egypt trailed at half-time but equalised in the 58th minute through Mostafa Ziko, who headed in Mohamed Hany’s cross.

Mohamed Salah put his side ahead in the 67th minute after exchanging passes with Ziko and finishing into the far corner. Mahmoud Trezeguet sealed the win in the 82nd minute with a diving header from a Salah corner.

The result gives the team their strongest position in a World Cup group stage. Hossam Hassan’s side drew 1-1 with Belgium in their opening match, while Iran and New Zealand drew 2-2. Belgium and Iran later drew 0-0 in the second round.

Egypt now enter the final matchday with several routes to qualification.

A win over Iran would send Egypt through as Group G winners with seven points.

A draw against Iran would also send the Egyptians through automatically. The Pharaohs would finish on five points and could finish first or second depending on Belgium’s result and tiebreakers.

A defeat to Iran would still be enough for Egypt to qualify automatically if Belgium fail to beat New Zealand. In that case, Iran would finish above Egypt, but Belgium would remain behind them with a draw or loss. If New Zealand beat Belgium, Egypt and New Zealand would both finish on four points, but the North Africans would stay ahead because they won the head-to-head meeting.

The only scenario that would leave Egypt outside the top two is a defeat to Iran combined with a Belgium win over New Zealand. In that case, Iran and Belgium would finish on five points, Egypt would finish third on four points, and New Zealand would be eliminated.

A third-place finish would not automatically eliminate Egypt. Under the new World Cup format, the top two teams from each group advance along with the eight best third-placed teams. Egypt would be knocked out only if they finish third in Group G and rank outside the eight best third-placed teams across the 12 groups.

If Egypt finish third, their chances would depend first on points, then goal difference, goals scored, team conduct score and FIFA ranking. The margin of any defeat to Iran would therefore affect their position in the third-place table.
