Egypt have drawn Cape Verde & Mauritania in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers as the Pharaohs will aim to reach the finals for the 27th time.
The draw took place on Thursday, July 4 in Johannesburg, South Africa, with 48 national teams being divided into twelve groups of four each.
Placed in Pot 1, Egypt were drawn at the top of group C which also included Cape Verde, the highest-ranked Pot 2 team, Mauritania, and Botswana.
The top two teams will qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, which is set to take place in Morocco between December 2025 to January 2026.
The match dates and order are yet to be announced, but the opening game will take place on the 2nd of September 2024.
Egypt had faced Cape Verde during the previous 2023 AFCON, drawing 2-2 in the final matchday which was enough for the Pharaohs to qualify for the knockout rounds.
Coincidentally, Egypt had also drawn Mauritania and Botswana during the 2008 AFCON qualifiers, which then Hassan Shehata’s men managed to win in Ghana.
However, the last time Egypt faced Mauritania was in April 2012, winning 3-0 in an international friendly, while facing Botswana in another friendly back in October 2019.
