The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has suspended Egypt midfielder Marwan Attia and forward Salah Mohsen ahead of the Nigeria match.
The decision rules both players out of the third-place playoff between Egypt and Nigeria. It will also carry over to the next official CAF match beyond the tournament.
The suspension by CAF is directly related to the players’ conduct after the match. This includes gestures made by Marwan Attia, suggesting that the referees had been bribed. As for Salah Mohsen, he has been suspended for making mocking gestures toward Senegalese journalists.
Attia has been a key piece for Egypt in this AFCON run, featuring in four matches and registering one goal and one assist. Mohsen, by contrast, played once in the group stage finale against Angola, where he also wore the captain’s armband.
The suspensions land at an awkward time for Hossam Hassan’s squad, which is already juggling absences heading into the Nigeria game in Casablanca.
The match between Egypt and Nigeria is scheduled for Saturday, 17 January 2026.
