Egyptian Greco-Roman wrestler Karam Gaber announced his final retirement after opting out of the African Championship qualifiers for the 2024 Paris Olympics.
Karam Gaber revealed that an injury prevented him from participating in the African Championship qualifiers for the 2024 Paris Olympics.
Gaber had announced his retirement in recent years, but he reconsidered recently and participated in a championship for veterans.
He initially confirmed his participation in the African Championship qualifiers for the Olympics but recently confirmed his withdrawal from the competition.
Gaber wrote on his personal Facebook account: “The injury prevented me from participating in the African Championship qualifiers for the Olympics.”
“Thanks to every Egyptian and all supporting entities from the Ministry of Youth to the Olympic Committee and thanks to the support of the Egyptian Wrestling Federation.”
“Best of luck to the entire team in securing qualification spots in the most competitive arenas. I will work with the national teams and transfer my experiences into the world of coaching.”
Wrestling officials tried to convince Karam Gaber to reconsider his decision to withdraw, especially considering his chances of achieving a significant medal due to his experience in recent years.
Gaber had previously won two Olympic medals, a gold in Athens 2004 and a silver in London 2012. However, the player insisted on his decision.
It is worth mentioning that he participated in the Veterans World Championships 2023 held in Greece last October, where he achieved first place and the gold medal.
