Hamdi Fathi's Al Wakrah crowned Qatari Cup champions

Hamdi Fathi’s Al Wakrah have been crowned 2023/2024 Qatari Cup champions after beating Al-Rayyan in the final on Saturday.

This marks Al-Wakrah’s second Qatari Cup glory, having only won the competition back in 1999, and it ends the club’s title drought which has been running since 2011 when they lifted the 2011 Stars Cup.

Having joined Al-Wakrah from Al Ahly back in the summer, this is also Hamdi Fathi’s first title outside of Egypt following his €3 million move.

Fathi started the game and thought he assisted his side’s opening goal after just nine minutes when he put Ayoub Assal through on goal before the Englishman netted; however, the goal was ruled out for offside.

Al Wakrah had a second goal ruled out for offside in the 29th minute, but this time through Mohamed Benyettou for the first half to end in a 0-0 draw.

With just ten minutes left on the clock, Nasser Al-Yazidi scored the winning goal after converting Gelson Dala’s through pass to win the game for Al-Wakrah.

It’s worth noting that Al-Wakrah finished fourth in the Qatari Stars League table this season, missing out on a spot in the Asian competitions next season.
