HANDBALL: Al Ahly beat Zamalek to win African Super Cup for third year

Al Ahly have clinched the African Handball Super Cup for the third consecutive year after beating arch-rivals Zamalek in the final.

The 2024 African Handball Super Cup was held from 15 to 16 April 2024 at the Miloud Hadefi Complex Omnisport Arena, in Oran, Algeria.

Al Ahly qualified for the competition as the 2023 African Handball Champions League winners, while Zamalek made it as the 2023 African Men’s Handball Cup Winners’ Cup winner.

Egypt’s Alexandria Sporting Club was also supposed to qualify Cup Winners’ Cup third-placed, but they withdrew from the tournament and were Congo’s BMC.

Both of the Egyptian giants made it to the final, after Al Ahly thrashed BMC 38-21, while Zamalek defeated JS Kinshasa 41-29 to mark the seventh consecutive final between both teams.

Since 2017, the Cairo derby has been the only game taking place at the African Handball Super Cup final, with both teams winning three each, before Al Ahly secured the fourth win on Tuesday.

The first-half ended in a 10-10 draw, before the Reds upped their game after the break to secure a 23-21 victory to lift their third consecutive title and the fourth overall.

The win also secures Al Ahly’s spot in the 2024 IHF Men’s Super Globe, having finished fifth in the previous edition of the competition out of 12 teams.
