A unique ball will be showcased at the UEFA Euro 2024 football championship, aiming to enhance the work of Video Assistant Referees (VAR).

The Adidas football used in the Euro 2024 championship will assist referees in detecting hand contact by players and signaling offside situations. The ball will be equipped with a special microchip utilizing limb-tracking technology, capable of generating a real-time three-dimensional image of the player. This VAR system will precisely determine where on the player’s body the ball made contact.

It’s worth noting that a ball for a semi-automatic offside detection system, considering the point of impact using sensors, was already used at the Qatar World Cup. A similar system is currently successfully employed in European cup matches.

Euro 2024 is scheduled to take place from June 14 to July 14 in ten cities in Germany: Hamburg, Berlin, Leipzig, Dortmund, Gelsenkirchen, Dusseldorf, Cologne, Frankfurt, Stuttgart, and Munich. The current champion of Europe is the Italian national team, defeating England in the Euro 2020 final.
