Ipswich Town Football Club has released a statement in support of their captain, Sam Morsy, following his decision not to wear the rainbow armband during the club’s match against Nottingham Forest.
The Egyptian international and practicing Muslim opted not to take part in the Premier League’s Rainbow Laces campaign during the match, which saw Ipswich suffer a 1-0 defeat.
His decision prompted speculation and questions about his reasoning, particularly since Morsy is reportedly the only Premier League captain who did not wear the rainbow armband during the fixtures played between Friday, November 29, and Sunday, December 1.
The Premier League has not made it mandatory for captains to wear the armband, instead giving individual players the freedom to decide for themselves.
In response, Ipswich Town issued a statement affirming their commitment to inclusivity and their respect for Morsy’s religious beliefs. The club emphasized its ongoing support for the LGBTQ+ community, stating: “Ipswich Town Football Club is committed to being a fully inclusive club that welcomes everyone.”
The statement continued, “We proudly support the Premier League’s Rainbow Laces campaign and stand with the LGBTQ+ community in promoting equality and acceptance. During this year’s campaign, members of the club’s men’s and women’s first teams visited our Foundation’s weekly LGBTQ+ football session, and the club made a joint pledge of solidarity and inclusivity alongside Nottingham Forest ahead of the game.”
The club concluded, “At the same time, we respect the decision of our captain Sam Morsy, who has chosen not to wear the rainbow captain’s armband due to his religious beliefs. We will continue to grow an environment where all are valued and respected, both on and off the pitch.”
