The 2026 World Cup for Iran has come into question after comments from Iranian Football Federation president Mehdi Taj.

A fast-moving geopolitical conflict has driven the recent uncertainty. U.S. and Israeli strikes hit Iran on Saturday, and regional retaliation followed.

Speaking to domestic media, Mehdi Taj said he doubts Iran can “look forward” to the FIFA World Cup after the latest U.S. strikes. He added that the Iranian sports authorities will make the final call.

Iran already qualified and landed in Group G with Egypt, Belgium, and New Zealand.

Although the tournament is hosted by Canada, Mexico, and the USA, all of Iran’s group matches are scheduled to take place in the United States, which complicates the situation further.

So far, FIFA secretary general Mattias Grafström said the organisation is monitoring developments. He added that FIFA stays in contact with the host countries.

What happens if Iran withdraws from the FIFA World Cup?

FIFA’s World Cup regulations set fines for withdrawal, plus repayment of contributions.

The same regulations also give FIFA room to act. They allow the organisation to replace a team in certain scenarios. They leave the choice to the body’s Council or a relevant committee.

Who could replace Iran?

FIFA has not named any replacement candidate. The regulations do not lock FIFA into one selection method.

Still, media speculation has started. Recent reports have mentioned Iraq and the UAE as possible stand-ins. No governing body has confirmed either option.

As things stand, the match between Egypt and Iran is set to take place in Seattle on Friday, 26 June 2026. (FIFA)
