Ismaily SC dropped to Egypt’s second tier after a 2-1 defeat to Wadi Degla, confirming the club’s second relegation in its history.

Ismaily SC were relegated from the Egyptian Premier League after losing to Wadi Degla in the relegation round on Tuesday. The defeat ended the club’s top-flight stay for the first time since the 1957-58 season.

Wadi Degla’s Mahmoud Diasty scored twice, in the 22nd and 62nd minutes. Eric Traore pulled one back for Ismaily in the second half, but the result left the former African champions bottom of the table.

The defeat left the club on 19 points from 10 matches in the relegation group. Wadi Degla moved to 48 points and remained top of the group.

The last time Ismaily dropped out of the top division was in the 1957-58 season. They returned to the top flight in 1962-63 and, until today, had not been relegated again.

The club remains one of Egyptian football’s major historical clubs. They won the Egyptian league in 1966-67, 1990-91, and 2001-02. Also, they were the first Egyptian club to win a continental title in 1969.
