Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher has voiced his disappointment with Mohamed Salah for publicly discussing his contract situation at Anfield.
Salah recently revealed that Liverpool have yet to approach him regarding a new contract, signaling he feels “more out than in” about staying at the club. Carragher, however, believes Salah’s decision to go public with these comments was ill-timed and selfish. Carragher’s criticism comes as rumors surrounding Salah’s future threaten to overshadow Liverpool’s upcoming fixtures against Real Madrid and Manchester City.
Carragher said, “Right now there’s obviously a big difference in the valuation. What Mo Salah and his agent value themselves at, whether that’s financially or in terms of length of contract, to what Liverpool do. So the reason Liverpool wouldn’t have offered a contract yet is because Mo Salah will turn it down, so they’re still in talks.”
Carragher went on to criticize Salah for shifting attention from Liverpool’s priorities as a team, “Liverpool have got Real Madrid midweek and they’ve got Manchester City at the weekend. That’s the story for Liverpool right now. The most important thing is Liverpool winning the Premier League. That is more important than any one player.”
The former defender however, was quick to acknowledge Salah’s immense contribution to Liverpool, ranking him among the top five players in the club’s history. “I would say Mo Salah is in the top five players to ever play for Liverpool. I would go Steven Gerrard, Kenny Dalglish, Graeme Souness, Ian Rush, and I’d put Mo Salah in fifth position.”
He continued, “Would we miss him if he moved on? Of course we would, but I can assure you Liverpool will move on.”
Salah, joined Liverpool from Roma in 2017 for £36.9 million and has been a transformative figure for the club. Scoring 223 goals, and recording 97 assists in 367 appearances, he is widely regarded as one of Liverpool’s all-time greats. However, with his contract expiring at the end of the current season, Salah’s future at Anfield hangs in the balance
