Al Ahly president Mahmoud El Khatib has announced that he will not run in the club’s upcoming elections.
In a statement addressed to the board, Mahmoud El Khatib said, “Eight years ago, we pledged to Al Ahly’s members and fans to work with sincerity, effort, and vision so that the club remains on top with its history, principles, and achievements. Over two election terms, I was honored to serve as president, working alongside you to elevate our club across sports, economic, administrative, and social levels.”
He added, “Several times I tried to step down, in line with the doctors’ advice, but circumstances always forced me to return. Now it is necessary to respond to their strong recommendations to avoid pressure. With elections less than two months away, I announce that I will not run for another term and will begin medical treatment immediately.”
El Khatib finished his statement with: “I place my full confidence in your ability to lead the coming phase, and I remain ready to offer advice until the new board is elected. I also call on Al Ahly’s members to attend the general assembly on September 19 to help shape the future of our club.”
Mahmoud El Khatib, who has served as Al Ahly president since 2017, previously held several administrative positions after his retirement as a ayer. His roles included board member, club treasurer, and vice president.
During his presidency, Al Ahly won five Premier League titles, three Egypt Cups, six Egyptian Super Cups, four CAF Champions League trophies, two CAF Super Cups. Additionally, the club competed in five FIFA Club World Cups, earning three bronze medals and became the first African team to qualify for the inaugural FIFA Intercontinental Cup.
Mahmoud “Bibo” El Khatib has an equally legendary status at the club as a player, winning 10 Prmier League titles, five Egypt Cups, two CAF Champions Leagues, and three African Cup Winners’ Cups.
To this day, El Khatib remains the Red Devils’ all-time top scorer with 157 goals across competitions, including a record 107 in the league.
