Swiss Coach Marcel Koller made history with Al Ahly after he broke Manuel Jose’s 20-year-old record in the Egyptian Premier League.
Al Ahly beat Bank Al Ahly 1-0 to become closer than ever to retaining the Egyptian Premier League as they now need only four points from their upcoming five games.
The victory extended Al Ahly’s winning run to 18 games, surpassing the league record for most consecutive wins in a single season, which was also set by the Reds during the 2004/05 season under legendary coach Portuguese Manuel Jose.
This season, Al Ahly haven’t dropped any points since losing to their arch-rivals Zamalek on April 15, winning every single game since then, including back-to-back victories over title rivals Pyramids FC.
The record for consecutive wins in the Egyptian Premier League is 21, which was also achieved by Al Ahly spanning the 2004-2005 and 2005-2006 seasons when Al Ahly won 17 consecutive games in the 2004-2005 season, then four in the 2005-2006 season.
Koller is also targeting the maximum number of points achieved in a single season. This number is also in Al Ahly’s name when they reached 89 points in the 2019-2020 season. Al Ahly can reach 90 points if they win all their remaining five games.
The Swiss coach already broke Manuel Jose’s record this season when he reached 23 games unbeaten in the CAF Champions League. The Portuguese coach’s record was 20.
