Omar Marmoush missed from the spot as Crystal Palace pulled off a historic victory over Manchester City in the FA Cup final.
Crystal Palace midfielder and Manchester City target, Eberechi Eze, scored the game’s only goal in the 16th minute, finishing a counterattack with a strike past Stefan Ortega.
Throughout most of the game, City dominated possession but struggled to break down Palace’s backline. Crystal Palace goalkeeper Dean Henderson pulled off an impressive performance, producing a series of saves, but none more crucial than his first-half penalty stop to deny Omar Marmoush.
Marmoush, who stepped up in place of Erling Haaland, saw his effort saved low by Henderson after Bernardo Silva was brought down in the box. Marmoush faded after the miss and was subbed off in the 76th minute.
Notably, the 26-year-old’s failed attempt marked the first penalty miss in an FA Cup final in 15 years, since Frank Lampard’s miss against Portsmouth in the 2009/10 season.
Pep Guardiola’s decision to field an overly attacking team, pushing Kevin De Bruyne and Bernardo Silva into deeper roles, backfired, as City lacked midfield control.
As for Kevin De Bruyne, the curtain falls on a legendary Manchester City career on a disappointing note.
The defeat ends City’s season without silverware, while Crystal Palace, lifted their first ever major trophy in the club’s 119-year career.
