Morocco were crowned champions of the 2025 FIFA Arab Cup after a dramatic 3–2 extra-time victory over Jordan on Thursday night.
The final had all the hallmarks of a classic. Morocco took an early lead but fell behind before fighting their way back to victory in extra time.
Morocco entered the final with strong momentum. They were unbeaten throughout the tournament, and their confidence was evident from the outset. Just four minutes in, midfielder Oussama Tannane made a stunning play. He scored from behind the halfway line after catching Jordanian goalkeeper Yazeed Abulaila off his line. The goal sent shockwaves through the stadium and left the goalkeeper needing treatment after colliding with the post while trying to recover.
Jordan struggled to respond before halftime but managed to stay close. A crucial goalline clearance from defender Issam Smeeri denied Tannane a second goal.
In the second half, Jordan surged ahead after key substitutions, with Ali Olwan scoring twice. First, he equalized with a header from a set-piece. Olwan then netted the second from the penalty spot following a handball by Achraf El Mahdioui.
The underdogs were unexpectedly ahead 2–1. However, Morocco’s experience shone through. In the 87th minute, Hamdallah took advantage of a scramble in the box to equalize, sending the match into extra time.
In the opening minutes of extra time, Jordan believed they had taken the lead with a goal from Mohannad Abu Taha, but VAR ruled it out for a handball. Shortly after, Hamdallah scored the winning goal in the 100th minute, capitalizing on a loose ball in the six-yard box and completing Morocco’s comeback.
Morocco celebrated winning the Arab Cup for the first time since 2012, finishing the tournament with five wins and one draw. Jordan, though disappointed, achieved a runner-up finish, their best performance since placing fourth in 1988.
The third-place playoff between Saudi Arabia and the UAE was halted at halftime due to heavy rain.
