Al Ahly’s Mostafa Shobeir has been nominated for the CAF Goalkeeper of the Year Award following an impressive Champions League campaign.
Shobeir played a crucial role in Al Ahly’s successful campaign, keeping clean sheets in every match he featured in.
His performances were crucial in helping Al Ahly win the tournament without a single loss, with the only goal conceded by the team occurring in a match where Mohamed El-Shenawy was in goal.
The 22-year-old Egyptian goalkeeper will face competition for the award from several top keepers, including Manchester United’s André Onana, and South African international Ronwen Williams.
Algeria’s Oussama Benbot, Tunisia’s AmanAllah Memiche, Munir Mohamedi, Nigeria’s Stanley Nwabali, Mali’s Djigui Diarra, and Ivory Coast’s Yahia Fofana have also made the list.
Essam El-Hadary is the only Egyptian keeper to have ever won the award, claiming it on four occasions in 2001, 2006, 2007, and 2008.
Morocco’s and Al-Hilal keeper Yassine Bounou was named the CAF Goalkeeper of the Year in 2023, but failed to earn him a nomination this year.
In addition to his goalkeeper nomination, Shobeir is also in the running for the CAF Interclub Player of the Year award, competing with Benbot, Memiche, and Williams.
The awards ceremony is set to take place in Morocco on December 16, 2024.
