Al Ahly’s Mostafa Shobeir has earned a spot on the five-man shortlist for the CAF Goalkeeper of the Year Award, following an exceptional CAF Champions League campaign.
Shobeir was instrumental in Al Ahly’s unbeaten run to the title, keeping clean sheets in every match he played. Notably, the only goal Al Ahly conceded during the tournament came in a match where Mohamed El-Shenawy was in goal.
The shortlist also features Manchester United’s André Onana, South Africa’s Ronwen Williams, Nigeria’s Stanley Nwabali, and Ivory Coast’s Yahia Fofana.
Egyptian legend Essam El-Hadary remains the only goalkeeper from the country to have won this prestigious award, securing it four times in 2001, 2006, 2007, and 2008.
In addition to his goalkeeper nomination, Shobeir is also a contender for the CAF Interclub Player of the Year Award, joining fellow Egyptians Hussein El Shahat and Ahmed Sayed “Zizo” on the shortlist. Other nominees include Ronwen Williams and Issoufou Dayo.
The current titleholder for CAF Goalkeeper of the Year is Morocco and Al Hilal’s Yassine Bounou, who won the award in 2023.
The awards ceremony is set to take place in Morocco on December 16, 2024.
