Cairo giants Zamalek have completed the signing of AS Saint-Étienne’s Moroccan full-back Mahmoud Bentayg on a season-long loan.
The Whites were in desperate need to reinforce their squad, especially the left-back position, following Ahmed Fetouh’s arrest and Mohamed Abdelshafy’s imminent retirement.
It looks like the choice has been put on Mahmoud Bentayg, who joins from Ligue 1 outfit Saint-Étienne, for him to become Zamalek’s first summer signing.
The 24-year-old joined Saint-Étienne only last summer from Raja Casablanca for a fee of €600,000, helping the club earn promotion from Ligue 2 through the playoffs.
In Saint-Étienne, Bentayg made 23 appearances, coming off the bench on 21 occasions, scoring once while assisting a further goal as well as featuring in all three promotion playoff games as a substitute.
This season, he was left out of the Saint-Étienne squad for both their opening games as the team currently sit in the relegation zone.
Zamalek had a disastrous last season, finishing third in the Egyptian Premier League, losing the 2022 Egypt Cup final to Al Ahly, while also getting knocked out of the 2022/23 Egypt Cup round of 16 by El-Gaish.
