Pyramids have edged ZED FC 1-0 in the 2024 Egypt Cup final to end their trophy drought and finally win their first title.
With Al Ahly withdrawing from the competition and Zamalek exiting from the round of 16, Pyramids were handed a golden opportunity to win their first trophy.
The club had a comfortable route to the semi-finals, beating Al Nasr, Abou Qir Fertilizers, and El-Gouna, before beating Al Masry on penalties in the semis.
On the other hand, ZED were also in the search for their first trophy after only earning promotion to the Egyptian Premier League last season.
ZED FC started the game well, dominating the first half creating a barrage of chances and forcing some good saves from Ahmed El-Shenawy, but still, both teams headed into the break at 0-0.
Pyramids became alive after the break and if it wasn’t for Ali Lotfi, they could have scored early, but they had to wait until the 86th minute when Mohamed Hamdy flicked a Pyramids corner towards the near post towards the far post for Fiston Mayele to tap it in giving Pyramids the lead.
The final minutes didn’t witness much for Pyramids to secure their 1-0 lead and become the first club outside of Al Ahly and Zamalek to win the Egypt Cup since ENPPI in 2011.
After the takeover in 2018 and changing their name from Al Assiouty to Pyramids, the club went on a spending spree to try and compete with Al Ahly and Zamalek.
They reached the Egypt Cup final twice, but lost to Al Ahly and Zamalek, and also lost one Egypt Super Cup final to the Reds, in addition to a CAF Confederation Cup final defeat.
That Egypt Cup win also guarantees Pyramids’ participation in the Super Cup in UAE alongside league winners Al Ahly, and Ceramica Cleopatra as league cup winners. The fourth spot will be decided based on the organizing committee’s decision.
