Al Ahly have reached an agreement with Mahmoud Metwaly to terminate his contract by mutual consent at the end of the current season.
Metwally’s contract was set to expire by June 2025, but Al Ahly opted to terminate his contract to give the player the freedom to choose his next destination.
The 31-year-old joined Al Ahly in 2019 from Ismaily as one of the best defenders in Egypt, but injuries hampered his career in Cairo and he failed to live up to his potential.
This season, Metwally made only five appearances for the Reds, scoring once in a league victory over El-Gouna and featured in the CAF Champions League, playing the two semi-final legs against TP Mazembe and was an unused substitute in the final against Esperance.
Overall, Metwally featured 59 times for Al Ahly, scoring twice, and winning 11 trophies, including three CAF Champions Leagues, two league titles, three Egypt Cups, and three Egypt Super Cups.
Metwally was also part of the Al Ahly team that took part in the 2023 Club World Cup, playing the full 90 minutes in games against Seattle Sounders and Real Madrid.
Al Ahly already signed Metwaly’s replacement when they completed the signing of Qatari international Youssef Ayman on a season-long loan with an option to buy.
