Brazilian head coach of the Egyptian Olympic team Rogério Micale believes the Pharaohs were unlucky in their Olympics opener, insisting it’s not over yet.

Egypt opened their 2024 Olympics football campaign with a disappointing 0-0 draw with the Dominican Republic to sit second behind group leaders Spain.

Speaking on the draw, 2016 gold medalist Micale said: “We had a lot of bad luck against the Dominican Republic, although at the same time, we didn’t perform as usual.

“But I am confident in the ability of the players to give their best. They may have been negatively affected by the pressure, but they have the necessary capabilities to correct the situation and remedy the opportunity.

“The Dominican is not an easy competitor as some say. They have a group of distinguished players who play in European leagues and our players missed scoring in more than four opportunities that were enough to decide the match in our favor.

“We still have two rounds to defend our dreams in the Olympics. We did not lose in the first round, and I ask the public to continue support and encouragement, and the next one will be better.”

Egypt plays Uzbekistan on Saturday before finishing their group by playing Spain the following Tuesday.

In the same group news, Spain beat Uzbekistan 2-1 to top the group after the first game.
