Former Al Ahly playmaker Saleh Gomaa has been sanctioned for attacking a referee during a game in the Iraqi league.
Gomaa had completed a move to Iraqi outfit Al-Karkh three months ago on a free transfer after his contract was terminated at Ismaily.
The midfielder featured for Al-Karkh in a league encounter against Al-Najaf on April 30th and seemed to have an altercation with the referee.
As a result, the Iraq Football Association decided to suspend Gomaa for six months and fined him $19,000 for his actions.
Local reports have confirmed that the reason for this is the Egyptian’s attitude towards the match official with the player allegedly spitting on the referee.
The statement also added that the 30-year-old can appeal the decision in the coming days according to their disciplinary regulations.
