Ali Maaloul and Saleh Gomaa scored in injury time to secure an important 2-0 victory against Ittihad of Alexandria in the Egyptian Premier League.
Al Ahly started on the front foot as they pushed forward to snatch an early lead and in the 20th minute, Amr El-Sulaya released Hussein El-Shahat up the right flank, however, the winger’s right footed shot was saved cleverly by El-Hany Soliman.
Ittihad responded through Al Ahly loanee Amar Hamdy in the 37th minute. The youngster dribbled skillfully past Yasser Ibrahim, but his low strike was saved by Mohamed El-Shennawy.
The Reds continued to dominate and maintain position in the second half, but failed to create any real threats on goal.
In the second minute of injury time, Geraldo received the ball up the right flank and sent a low cross towards Ali Maaloul near the edge of the box. The Tunisian smashed the ball into Soliman’s net with a powerful first-time shot, making it 1-0.
Al Ahly doubled their lead just four minutes later through super-sub Gomaa, after Ramadan Sobhi launched an extraordinary solo run, before laying the ball to Saleh Gomaa, who put the ball past Soliman.
After the win, Al Ahly top the league with 55 points ahead of their anticipated clash against Mamelodi Sundowns on the 5th of April in the CAF Championship League.
