Zamalek booked their spot in the Egyptian Super Cup final following a penalty shootout victory over Pyramids in the competition’s semifinals.
Following a 1-1 draw in regular time at the Al Nahyan Stadium in Abu Dhabi, Pyramids, who controlled much of the game, were left frustrated as their efforts came up short in the penalty shootout.
Zamalek XI: Mohamed Awaad; Hamza Mathlouthi, Mohamed Shehata, Hossam Abdulmaguid, Mahmoud Bentayg; Nasser Maher, Abdallah El-Saied, Zeyad Kamal; Mostafa Shalaby, Seifeddine Jaziri, Ahmed “Zizo”
Pyramids FC XI: Ahmed El-Shennawy; Mahmoud Marei, Ahmed Samy, Mohamed Hamdi, Mohamed Chibi; Blati Touré, Mohanad Lasheen, Ramadan Sobhi, Sodiq Ougola, Ibrahim Adel, Fiston Mayele
Pyramids started strong, with Ibrahim Adel scoring early in the 14th minute of the first half, converting a close-range effort after being set up by Ramadan Sobhi. They dominated midfield for much of the match, with Zamalek missing key players like Nabil “Dunga” and Omar Gaber due to injuries.
Despite this, The White Knights found an equalizer just before halftime through Seifeddine Jaziri, who tapped in with an assist from Nasser Maher.
Pyramids earned a penalty in the second half after Mahmoud Bentayg brought down Sodiq Ougola, but Ramadan Sobhi failed to give his team the lead, keeping the game level.
In the final 20 minutes, Zamalek introduced fresh legs with Konrad Michalak and Nasser Mansi in an attempt to finish the game in full time but failed to do so.
A dramatic moment came late when Zamalek’s Youssef “Obama” scored a header, but VAR ruled the goal offside, sending the match to a penalty shootout.
Zamalek converted all five of their penalties, while Pyramids’ Mostafa Fathi, saw his attempt saved by Mohamed Awaad.
This victory sends Zamalek into the final, where they will face the winner of the clash between Ahly and Ceramica Cleopatra on October 24.
