Wayne Rooney praised Emam Ashour’s performances for Egypt at the World Cup and questioned why the Al Ahly midfielder is not playing in Europe.
England and Manchester United legend Wayne Rooney heaped praise on Emam Ashour after the Egypt midfielder scored in the Pharaohs’ World Cup win over Australia.
Rooney said Ashour had shown a high level with Egypt during the tournament and questioned why the Al Ahly player was not playing in Europe.
“It is wonderful to watch Emam Ashour perform at this level with Egypt at this stage of the tournament,” Rooney said. “He is a player with great quality on the ball, and he makes many sacrifices for his national team.”
Rooney also said Ashour’s impact had been clear from the start of Egypt’s campaign and described his presence on the pitch as a source of added strength for the team.
“I do not understand why he does not play in Europe,” the Englishman added. “This type of player deserves greater appreciation and respect in line with his talent.”
Ashour scored Egypt’s goal in their 1-1 draw with Australia in the round of 32 before Hossam Hassan’s side advanced 4-2 on penalties. The midfielder had also scored in Egypt’s opening 1-1 draw with Belgium.
The win gave Egypt their first World Cup knockout-stage victory and sent them into the round of 16 against Argentina.
Egypt will face Argentina on July 7 as they continue their deepest World Cup run.
